5 Stages of the Design Thinking Process

In life we’re always bumping into new problems, and while we have the desire to solve them, it’s often hard to find the right solution or even know where to start. That’s where “design thinking” comes in. Design Thinking is a process that seeks to solve complex problems by approaching it from the user’s perspective. It also aims to turn your ideas into tangible, testable products as quickly as possible—and provides an opportunity to make changes and improvements to an idea before spending the time and money building the real thing.

While you can read in-depth about the techniques and theory related to the design thinking process in our Design Thinking Handbook by Eli Woolery, we’ll dive into the basics here.

The design thinking framework can be broken down into 5 actionable parts:
Empathize, or getting to know your users and their challenges
Define, or homing in on what problem, exactly needs to be solved
Ideate, or outside-the-box thinking about what solutions and angles can be discovered
Prototype, or creating something tangible that users can then try-out.
And finally, test, or giving your prototype to real users who will determine if your solution is valid or if it needs some work.

Although these steps appear to be sequential, keep in mind that design thinking is less linear and more iterative.
